In 1766 Michael Braun moved from Pennsylvania to the area, and so began the history of Granite Quarry. Mr. Braun constructed what is now known as the Old Stone House out of native hand-hewn granite. In the late 1800’s the town was originally known as Woodville. By 1891 it became known as Woodsides, named after the family of Woodsides who lived in the community. The name was officially changed in 1901.
In 1901 the post office name was changed to Granite Quarry. Then in 1905 The NC General Assembly approved the town’s name change to Granite Quarry, in recognition of the stone quarry. A history of quarrying in the area can be found on the town’s government page here.
